Carlsberg: Probably Serif
As Carlsberg continued to grow globally, the challenge was to strengthen its distinctive brand assets, support premiumisation and build consistency across markets. With increasing marketing restrictions limiting the use of logos and packaging assets in dark markets, the brand needed new ways to build recognition and stay in consumers’ memories.
Our distinctive brand asset study confirmed the strength of Carlsberg's iconic 1904 wordmark, originally designed by Danish Art Nouveau pioneer Thorvald Bindesbøll. So, rather than reinventing what was already working, we saw an opportunity to make its most recognisable characteristics work even harder.
We created Probably Serif, a bespoke typeface that translates the wordmark's distinctive curves, angled cuts and expressive ligatures into a contemporary global brand asset. Developed across Latin and Cyrillic scripts, Probably Serif gives Carlsberg a consistent and recognisable visual voice, capable of carrying the brand's character independently of its logo, across markets, channels and touchpoints.
More than a typeface, it's a strategic asset designed to strengthen recognition, reinforce premium positioning and build long-term brand equity. By transforming over a century of distinctive visual heritage into a scalable global system, we've given Carlsberg another powerful way to remain unmistakably Carlsberg, wherever consumers encounter the brand.
